TUMBY BAY - It’s important to differentiate between your government and your country. Neither wholly represents the other and oft times the difference is quite stark.
Whereas your country is consistent and reliable, your government can be quite the opposite.
At the moment, for instance, the Australian government appears to be out of step with its country and its people on a plethora of issues.
I have a great affection for Australia and its people but I’m coming to loath the Australian government.
I think the Australian government is, in so many ways, setting out to destroy our great country through a combination of deliberate ignorance and arrogance.
For some inexplicable reason they think what they are doing is what the people want and what the nation needs. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The view of the current government about what PNG as a nation represents is in sharp contrast to what the general population sees.
The government sees PNG as a burgeoning economy, a leader in its region and a model of a small and rapidly growing developing country.
It sees PNG through the lens of massive resource development and escalating wealth, and through the windscreens of expensive Italian motorcars.
Why it isn’t obvious to the government is a measure of their ignorance and arrogance, just as it is in Australia.
The Papua New Guinean government desperately wants the rest of the world to see the nation through the same warped lens that it does.
It wants to impress the world. It wants the world to marvel at the great job it has done. It wants the world to acknowledge PNG as a player in the game.
While this pride may be shared by many people, for others it creates a huge dilemma.
If you are proud of your country how can you possibly tell the world leaders coming to Port Moresby next month the real truth?
In your heart you know they need to know the truth. But by the same token how can you shame your nation by telling them the truth?
It is entirely possible to display the great things your nation represents while acknowledging that your government is totally corrupt and incompetent and does not in any way represent the reality or the spirit of the PNG people.
Be proud of your country and ashamed of your government.
Show the world the difference. Show the world that you know the difference. Show them what is good about your country and what is bad.
Shout down your government. Demonstrate on the streets. Write articles the world will read. Make sure they know the truth.
We on the outside will know what you are doing and we will applaud you for your bravery and your adherence to the truth.
If you don’t do this you deserve everything your government does to you.
