Can't remember exactly why he was up there but I knew Gordon when I was posted to Sogeri in 1966. Have a feeling he was a bit further up the road in the rubber growing area on the Sogeri plateau, maybe at Koitaki.
Presumably there was a Dept of Ag office up there.

Anyway Gordon and I used to drive down from Sogeri to Moresby every now and then on a Friday night to watch the Papuan Rugby League fixture of the day.

Friday night footy in Moresby was far, far ahead of AFL and NRL fixturing. We're talking of the sixties here in Moresby.
Not Phil Fitzpatrick's cuppa tea. Local sports fixtures, either in Oz or in PNG, I fancy.

Incidentally Gordon's preferred code would have been rugby union, but he had catholic tastes as Peter Daniels has pointed out. He was a big, solid bloke so rugby union scrums would have suited Gordon to a tee.
