The Papua New Guinea Society of Writers, Editors and Publishers Ltd
BACKGROUND
In early February 2012, the newly-established Papua New Guinea Society of Writers, Editors and Publishers opened its register for members.
The Society sprung out of the Crocodile Prize national literary awards. In parallel with the first year of the awards in 2011, a workshop for emerging Papua New Guinean writers was held.
Part of the workshop was spent in discussing the future direction of a national creative literature in PNG, and one idea to emerge from this was to establish a society that would cater to the interests and professional development of writers, editors and publishers.
And so the Society was incorporated in PNG late last year and since then has developed a draft constitution, appointed an interim executive committee and, just recently, begun to recruit members.
Its first annual general meeting will be held in Port Moresby in September, at which time a wholly Papua New Guinean board will be elected.
FUNCTIONS
The Society will not only administer the Crocodile Prize literary contest but also assist PNG writers, editors and publishers to develop a thriving creative writing sector in PNG.
So, especially if you’re a Papua New Guinean writer, this is the organisation you need to join to ensure it can build its collective power to get your writing to an audience and to professionalise creative writing in PNG.
The Society’s objectives include the promotion of a writing and reading culture in PNG, the development of professional writers, editors and publishers, and assisting members to publish their work.
You can download the interim constitution of the Society here.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is free for PNG citizens. You must apply on this Membership Application Form which should be emailed to the Society here.
For non-Papua New Guineans, associate membership is available at an annual membership fee of $A50. Use the same application form.

My name is Thea Regan, a producer for Wondros Productions http://www.wondros.com/. We are currently producing a documentary series highlighting non-profit organizations across the globe.
One stop will be in Papua New Guinea in May of this year. Right now I am looking for a fixer for Papua New Guinea. I came across your website PNG Attitude and thought you might be a person who could help me.
I wanted to see if you might know of any fixers or producers based in Papua New Guinea. We are looking for someone can help us to obtain permits, organize transportation and overall logistics of hosting a production company in country.
Please let me know if you have any leads or referrals. I would appreciate any help.

I am writing a biographical note on Captain Dr Geoffrey Hampden Vernon MC (1882-1946). He was truly a great man.
In his book on the Kokoda Trail, Stuart Hawthorne refers briefly to Vernon’s time on Thursday Island.
He has seen material I have not – so I would like to ask him where he found that material.
By any chance do any of your readers know how I can contact Stuart?
