THE 2017 National Budget will be handed down in parliament this afternoon and former prime minister Sir Mekere Morauta says the national government must construct it properly and follow through with it.
“The budget is the pathway,” Sir Mekere said. “It sets out where the nation is going and government must ensure this very important document is constructed properly, presented properly and followed though properly with everyone having a say in its process and structure.”
Government officials will explain the budget detail during a media lockup between 10am and 2pm, when the Treasurer will present the budget to parliament, which will then adjourn for a week in which the opposition to prepare its budget reply.
It is believed the 2017 Budget will maintain the government’s key priority expenditures such as free primary health care, subsidised specialist healthcare and tuition fee free education.
