A PAPUA New Guinean teacher who switched to a career in broadcasting has come to Mildura in north-western Victoria to pick up some tips from the city’s ABC radio team.
Helen Sapien, from East New Britain Province, is spending five days at the ABC Mildura-Swan Hill studios following a stint at ABC International in Melbourne.
Ms Sapien received the study trip after winning an award from the Media Development Initiative, a partnership between the ABC and the National Broadcasting Corporation of Papua New Guinea.
“The social journalism award is designed to help broadcasters and journalists back in PNG update their skills,” Ms Sapien said.
“It strengthens production and editorial skills of NBC content makers in a competitive international arena.
“The award also helps me to build my skills in producing for online news and exposes Papua New Guinean broadcasters to a wider range of social, political and cultural issues in Australia.”
