A great article Keith on truly exciting and interesting days.

Apologies Hughie, I didn't know of your condition and didn't mean to mock.

But you weren't the only one sent nearly barking mad by the bureaucracy imposed by the ABC and its 'advisers'.

Keith, a great piece, congratulations!

An enduring memory of life at NBC HQ in Boroko was the dog, of the breed known generically as the husky, owned by one of the ABC mandarins then working in a senior job with the NBC.

The husky, Hughie by name (if I recall correctly), sat outside his master's office on the concrete floor, his massive coat of cold weather fur causing him to puff, pant and slobber all day in the tropical heat.

One had to step around a slumbering Hughie and his pool of exhaled liquid to get along the corridor.

While he would probably have been happier pulling sleds in the Arctic, poor Hughie had to suffer the tropical heat of Port Moresby. He must have had days when he asked himself "why me?"

An inappropriate breed of dog for such a climate, I would have thought.

But so much was inappropriate and odd in those days, when the conflicting organisational cultures brought together within the NBC umbrella caused many of us old DIES hands, unused to ABC ways, to puff and pant, sweat a bit and slobber a lot.

I had it on good authority at the time that Hughie suffered a nervous breakdown, apparently quite unusual in a dog - KJ

Lovely piece, Keith. Is it already a book? Need to be in a book so that people can have a feel of someone's contributions to PNG.

Maybe when PNG Atitude goes to its grave, assuming I am not already in mine, there will be time for a book. Meanwhile, perhaps articles and essays are the way ahead - KJ

Loved reading this young turk's own account of how things were seen differently with a new pair of eyes - and the vision of a benevolent society aided by a self- sustaining and independent media that you held. Thank you.

What a better story to hear on the NBC's 40th anniversary.
Thank you, Keith, Papua New Guinea's rare and true friend.

Saying a simple thank you at someone's grave and funeral is something not many people like myself would freely do, so please accept a thank you from a living PNGean to a living PNGean friend.

The age old views that existed at the time do present themselves in other facets of life in PNG's journey.
Such a story like this helps us a little bit more to be a learned citizenry.

Thanks also for making PNG Attitude an important forum for exchange, interaction and friendship.

May God's grace keep you strong and energetic to keep on telling us more about our country's history.

It was all done - and is still done - with much affection for your country and its great people, Corney - KJ

The NBC required proper funding to fulfil its historic mission as a medium of information and development and it was a serious strategic error by the Australian and PNG governments of the time not to realise this.

The role of the Central Planning Office at the time was inimical both to good planning and effective development.

It was headed then by Charles Lepani (who I am pleased to call a friend) but most of its policy was driven by a bunch of misguided Australians.

The NBC never really recovered from its treatment in those early years of independence.

What a great piece. Would love it if you could turn your media stories like this into a book.

But from what you're saying, I get the feeling that NBC was doomed from the start?

Somare's attitude to media had not changed over the years and NBC is still underfunded giving room for the commercial sector and, dare I say, Radio Australia's Tok Pisin service to make inroads into PNG.

Not sure what Kundu2 will look like in five years time.
