Back in 1971, as a Geography teacher at Brandi High School, Wewak, I was very keen to take my students on an excursion.

I found I could hire the Government trawler, the "Rouna Falls", on a Saturday, and take my geography students over to the large offshore island of Kairiru, that lay beyond Mushu Island, off the coast to the north-west of Wewak.

Here we were dropped off on the southern shores of Kairiru, near St. Xavier’s High School, and then, after inspecting the high school with its small hydro-electric power scheme, we hiked over a high ridge to Victoria Bay, which was lined with hot volcanic springs.

The Rouna Falls was able to proceed around to Victoria Bay and pick us up.

In 1971 I was new to hiking in TPNG and decided that I would wear socks and sturdy walking boots. But we had to cross these many small streams and I delayed everyone by having to take off my boots and socks every time we came to a stream.

My male students soon came to my rescue and two students would make a seat out of their hands and carry me across the small creeks. They were quite mature male students and you can imagine they found this “great fun”, carrying their 32-year-old lady teacher across the streams.

In later excursions to Kairiru I adopted the PNG custom and went barefooted all the way. No doubt, I appreciated the fine water in these streams and enjoyed drinking quite a lot of it.

I also hope this wonderful water supply is never spoilt. It is a wonderful gift from God. You can't drink from the creeks around Sydney anymore. I wonder if they still have the hydro-electricity scheme at St. Xavier's.
