For those who aren't aware, this is the second in a trilogy of books by Prof Diamond. The first is entitled 'The Third Chimpanzee' and the third is 'Collapse'.

All three books are excellent reading and refer to PNG in passing as the professor has visited there many times.

They stimulate the grey matter and provide factual evidence to substantiate his prognostications.

The third book 'Collapse' should be a wake-up call for today's generations, as it effectively details how civilisations expand to consume the available resources and then implode.

A sort of adaption of the old Parkinson's law on the public service, i.e., 'Work expands to fill the time available'.

I have just finished this incredible book, a brilliant piece of work on anthropology and human diversification that starts and ends with PNG in great detail.

In fact, the National Geographic Society has just released a two volume DVD of the same thing ,with great PNG footage.

It is hard to believe that, at one point in human history, PNG was the most advanced society in the world and that its organised agriculture dates back at least 40,000 years.
